Your life is a reflection of your choices. This is a bold statement; however, it is a true one. Even for you, and for me.
We did not choose what happened to us, but we can choose what to do moving forward. We also chose if we even want to move forward. Staying stuck in resentment and pain can be a choice. Trying to do something with our pain is also a choice. A better one. There are countless examples of people that endure pain, hardship, struggles, and suffering. Only to develop their strengths and thrive.
Staying hyper-focused in our struggles will only perpetuate our difficulties. Changing the narrative from: “why is this happening to me?” to: “What can I learn from this?” or even to “How can I make this work for me?” will help us problem-solve and start to move forward. But even that is a choice.
I am sure there are instances in which this statement is most difficult to apply. But, in reality, the alternative is less hopeful and less beneficial.
I have a sticky note with this quote in my workspace: “My life is a reflection of my choices” Please, do the same and you will see how empowering it feels.
In the past, I chose to work extra hard on detriment to my health and do whatever it took for me to learn English and earn a master’s in mental health counseling in a language that I was barely learning. That was my choice.
I was also the one that chose to sleep about 5 to 6 hours most nights to do the schoolwork that took me twice the time it would take my peers. I “gave” myself depressive episodes overlapping chronic anxiety. Those were also my choices.
Playing small to avoid taking risks and the pain of being criticized can also be a choice.
The point is that when we take ownership of our life, ownership of our decisions, we are way more empowered and with better chances of moving forward in our lives. But even that is a choice. Agree?
